Arterton is pleased to introduce Michael, otherwise known as The Jermyn St Gentleman. For those who frequent St James’s however, no introduction is necessary. Easily spotted around the area by his impeccable dress and joyful presence. For over five decades, Michael has been devoted to the heart of London’s menswear scene. His commitment to craftsmanship and genuine passion has made him not only a recognisable figure in the area, but a respected custodian of its sartorial heritage.
The title The Jermyn Street Gentleman was first suggested by a friend, who remarked that they can no longer walk through the area with Michael as it meant being stopped several times along the way. What began as an affectionate joke has since become a badge of honour, and a well-followed Instagram handle where his weekly ensembles and outings are eagerly anticipated.

How one becomes the Gentleman of Jermyn St
Many first encountered Michael during his long tenure at Crockett & Jones, where he guided London’s businessmen and gentlemen in their pursuit of the perfect English shoe. In fact, anyone who has worked in men’s footwear over the past few decades may well have been trained by him.

He later spent several years at Ralph Lauren’s Bond Street flagship. A true patriot of the brand’s heritage and design, he even assisted Mr Lauren himself on numerous occasions.
Now retired, he remains anything but removed from the world he helped shape. Michael continues to devote his time to fine menswear, offering wisdom to a new generation and guiding their discovery on the well established traditions of St James’s sartorial community. Each December you will see Michael dashing around the Savile-Row Crisis pop-up in his custom racing green apron.

A Life of Style and Curation
Michael’s dedication to dress extends quite literally to his home. He even transformed several bedrooms into walk-in wardrobe spaces, each organised by season, with an entire room devoted solely to accessories.
Yet his approach to dressing is far from whimsical, it is methodical and follows a strict routine. Each night he begins, always with his coat first. A colour is chosen and a theme for the look is established. From there come the trousers and shirt, followed by any additional layers. Accessories are the final touch, and for Michael, no gentleman is complete without them. A perfectly folded pocket square, the occasional tie, vibrant socks, and a hat to tie the ensemble all together. Still, as a devoted shoe man himself, no accessory is dearer than what pair he chooses for that day.
The Famous Polka Dot Scarf
Arterton had the pleasure of viewing his most cherished pieces, each accompanied by a story and an abundance of personal sentiment and history. Through decades of collecting and curating fine fashion, one particular piece stood out from the rest, his treasured polka dot scarf. A scarf which has been with him since his teenage years and a quiet witness to his journey. Accompanying him on many adventures; this scarf was in attendance with Michael at the last performance of Jimmy Hendrix, at the Isle of Wight 1970.

What it means to be a Gentleman
Michael is not beloved solely for his encyclopaedic knowledge of menswear or his distinctive sense of style. Ask him what it means to be a gentleman, and his answer is simple: it is an attitude and warm presence.
For Michael, true gentility is built on good manners and genuine kindness. The clothes may turn heads, but it is his warmth and character that leave a lasting impression. Crowning him with a well deserved title as our Jermyn Street Gentleman.
