Arterton have recently developed, in collaboration with the esteemed Leder Ogawa from Japan, the Arterton X Leder Ogawa Cordovan Shoe Horn.
This shoe horn has been meticulously composed of Shiniki Japanese Cordovan leather. Leder Ogawa is widely esteemed for their Cordovan leather. Particularly their unique True Aniline Dye Cordovan, exclusively produced by the Leder Ogawa craftsmen in Japan.Â
The Process at Leder Owaga
The first step in preparing the Cordovan is degreasing. This consists of treating the surface texture with a tool named a ‘slicker’, using controlled amounts of oil and water. After the degreasing is complete, the hind will be hung to dry. The hinds are dried using no artificial heat, instead by natural winds, hung in areas protected by the shade. Each hind varies in thickness and shape, therefore must be checked individually through the drying process.Â
Once dried, the hind will be shaved; a specialist process where the leather is shaved as to expose the Cordovan fibre within. Similar to polishing a diamond in the rough. This requires careful skill as to ensure the cordovan fibre layer is kept at more than 1 mm of thickness. The cordovan will then be processed through a glazing machine, pressing the cordovan fibres in one direction. The glazing process is what results in a mirror like shine.Â
Next the cordovan is dyed using the aniline process, technology developed by founder Saburo Ogawa. Finally, a hydraulic press is used on the cordovan to ensure it is flattened and smooth. A special wax is applied to the cordovan, leaving a shiny finish.
The finishing process for the Shinki Cordovan consists of a combined 55 hour process per hide. Each hide is then carefully examined prior to being cut (clicked) to shape the shoe horn.
The Shoe Horn
Due to its durability, cordovan was deemed the ideal material to fashion the Arterton X Leder Owaga Shoe Horn. The leather's natural character, texture and sheen all work harmoniously in practicality and aesthetic value. The shoe horns' compact nature and fitted brass key ring allows for portable functionality. Further the keyring provides the ability to hang as to be easily accessible. The shoe horn is available in four sophisticated shades; each fit with elegant contrast stitching.Â
