A Conversation with Champion Shoe Shiner Yuya Hasegawa; A Pioneer in Japan’s Sartorial Culture

The most recent Arterton collaboration, Tales from a Master Shoeshiner: Yuya Hasegawa dives into the world of Japan’s sartorial scene, expert shoe care advice, and an overall captivating conversation of culture.

Hasegawa began his remarkable journey at Tokyo Station, shining shoes on the street as a way of income. He purchased his first set of basic shoe shining tools with just 500 yen (£2.53) in which he used throughout his station days. Refining and tailoring his skills through his services to the public. Since he has opened an international chain of luxury shoe-shining bars, his own line of shoe care products and been awarded a champion of shoeshining (London Super Trunk Show 2017). An accomplished title in recognition of Hasegawa’s talent. In May 2025, Hasawgawa returned to the scenes of the London Trunk Show to present a specialised workshop for the next generation of aspiring enthusiasts.

While in London, Hasegawa offered complimentary shoe-shining in situ at the Arterton Showroom. Our clients were able to view his master skills at work, learning first hand his professional techniques.

In his discussion with Arterton, Hasegawa emphasised the deep-rooted culture surrounding shoe care in Japan. The nation embodies an attitude of longevity, where meticulous care and cleanliness are values shared by people across all professions. In contrast, the UK presents a different landscape. While it is home to renowned shoemakers and a subset of society that takes pride in their footwear, the commitment to shoe care is not as ingrained in British culture as it is in Japan. Geographic and cultural factors, including the weather, play significant roles in this distinction.

Reflecting on his career, Hasegawa noted a significant shift in the shoe shining industry over the years. When he first entered the profession, it was predominantly occupied by older men and women. However, he has observed a growing interest among the younger generation, marking a vibrant change in the culture of shoe shining.

As Hasegawa continues to shine a light on the craft, he inspires a new appreciation for shoe care. His journey from a humble start to becoming a champion serves as a testament to the passion and dedication that can elevate a simple profession into an art form.
